King Edward Stakes Betting Odds

Despite drawing an unusually short field of seven in 2015, the King Edward did not fail to produce an exciting result as 7/2 shot Tower of Texas sprinted clear of the field in the stretch to win with relative ease while setting a new King Edward speed record, stopping the timer in 1:32.45. 7/2 was indeed a fair price for a horse with several solid handicapping angles working in his favor. Bettors using an online racebook were able to take advantage even further with the company's win-or-lose rebate program that offers 3% returns on staight bets and 5% on exotic wagers.

2016 King Edward Stakes Contenders

With a field of nine signed on for the 2016 renewal of the Grade 2 King Edwards Stakes July 2, the group will be led by 2/1 favorite Full Mast, a French-raced horse who swooped into Belmont Park June 5 last out to win an allowance race. The four year-old daughter of Mizzen Mast now trained by Bill Mott is a group 3 winner in France and has been victorious in 4 of 6 career starts. Full Mast will be prominently opposed by Smokem Kitten, a Michael Maker trainee, who has won 3 of 5 career efforts including an impressive last-out score in the Grade 3 Miami Mile Stakes April 30 at Gulfstream Park. Tower of Texas (7/2) won the King Edwards with a record-breaking time last year, but has been inactive since September.

Named for King Edward VII of the United Kingdom, who was crowned in 1901, the King Edward Breeders' Stakes has also been run as the King Edward Gold Cup and King Edward Breeders' Handicap until assuming its current name in 2007. Run at old Woodbine Park until 1958, the race was also moved from dirt to turf that year and has been held at a variety of distances from one mile to a mile and one quarter. Riding the River won consecutive runnings of the King Edward in 2012 and 2013 becoming the first horse to do so since Lord Vancouver accomplished the same feat in 1972 and 1973. Inferno is the only three-time winner of the race, winning three consecutive editions from 1906-1908.
