Saturday, January 29 at Gulfstream Park is one of the biggest races of the year: the Pegasus World Cup (G1)! This $3 million race, covering a mile and an eighth on the Gulfstream dirt track, drew a field of nine handicap horses. The eyes of the racing world will be on Gulfstream on Saturday, and you can bet it from the comfort of your own home here in Canada!

The Pegasus World Cup has been run since 2017, and some of the greatest horses of the last five years have lined up in the starting gate. Top horses like Gun Runner and Arrogate are among its winners. 2021 winner Knicks Go, who went on to win the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) last year, will be favoured to become the first two-time Pegasus winner.

Will Knicks Go write a new chapter of the history books?  Read on to find out!

2022 Pegasus World Cup Field

This is the official field for the 2022 Pegasus World Cup including post positions, trainers, jockeys, and morning lines:

  1. Knicks Go (Brad Cox/Joel Rosario) - 6/5
  2. Chess Chief (Dallas Stewart/Reylu Gutierrez) - 10/1
  3. Stilleto Boy (Ed Moger, Jr./Kent Desormeaux) - 20/1
  4. Life Is Good (Todd Pletcher/Irad Ortiz, Jr.) - 7/5
  5. Empty Tomb (Robert Falcone, Jr./Paco Lopez) - 20/1
  6. Sir Winston (Mark Casse/Edwin Gonzalez) - 12/1
  7. Title Ready (Dallas Stewart/Tyler Gaffalione) - 20/1
  8. Endorsed (Mike Maker/Umberto Rispoli) - 20/1
  9. Commandeer (James Toner/Julien Leparoux) - 30/1

The track released a morning line, though it is only their best guess as to what the odds will look like come post time. You cannot lock in those prices. Your better bet is to place your bet at an online sportsbook. They offer fixed odds, meaning you lock in the best price the moment you place down your stake. If you see an overlay, you don’t have to worry about fluctuations.

Pegasus World Cup Favourites

Horses who win the Pegasus World Cup are often the ones who take betting action. In all five editions of this race, either the betting favourite or the second choice has won the race. In Saturday’s race, two horses stand to take the most interest from the wagering public: defending champion #1 Knicks Go and Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1) winner #4 Life Is Good.

The favourite will be Knicks Go. He is already a winner over course and distance in this race last year and comes in off a Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) win. But, his winning efforts tend to come when he can clear early and cruise home. However, when he runs into a top-class miler with a lot of early speed, that can lead Knicks Go to work too hard early and fade out of the money late.

Life Is Good is exactly such a horse. In six starts he has never raced poorly. He has the speed to take a sprint race gate to wire, but also the stamina to carry his speed two turns. His pedigree supports the stretch out to a mile and an eighth, too. With a better gate than Knicks Go, Life Is Good should be able to make Knicks Go work too hard early, and kick home to victory in the lane.

Pegasus World Cup Exotics Contenders

Though shorter-priced horses tend to win the Pegasus, exotic wagers are a whole different story. Every year, at least one horse at 10/1 or more has run into the top three, and some years longshots finish both second and third. With some horses north of 30/1 running into the money in the Pegasus, finding good exacta and trifecta longshots is often a lucrative way to bet this race.

#8 Endorsed is the most interesting longshot in the Pegasus World Cup. He is a proven Gulfstream Park horse, never worse than third in four tries over the course. And, though all his recent races are sprints, he has hit the board in stakes races at Saratoga in both his nine-furlong tries. With the tactical speed to work a good trip, it would be no surprise to see Endorsed shine.

#3 Stilleto Boy has emerged as a consistent yet underestimated horse. A longshot when he won the Iowa Derby last year, he has since finished in the money in a pair of Southern California Grade 1 races, including a second-place finish in the mile and an eighth Awesome Again (G1). With tactical speed and the ability to run well at different tracks, Stilleto Boy can achieve another G1 placing.

#5 Empty Tomb also has claims on an underneath share. Though he is not quite as fast early as the two chalks, he has enough speed to be forward, and he can hit the board with a stalking trip. High-percentage Paco Lopez knows how to carve out a good journey over the Gulfstream dirt. And, in seven starts going a mile and an eighth, he has finished either second or third five times.

Pegasus World Cup Free Bets

Here are your best bets for the 2022 Pegasus World Cup:

  • $0.50 trifecta key - #4 Life Is Good with #8 Endorsed, #3 Stilleto Boy, #5 Empty Tomb
  • $0.20 superfecta - #4 Life Is Good with #8 Endorsed, #3 Stilleto Boy, #5 Empty Tomb

Remember, the best sportsbooks in Canada let you bet the horses at racetracks in Ontario and also all around the world. Make your accounts at one or more of these sites, and be ready for a profitable experience in the Pegasus and all year long!
