The Woodbine Mile is coming up on Saturday, September 18! The race drew a field of ten of the top turf milers in North America to run a mile over Woodbine’s sweeping E. P. Taylor Turf Course. The winner gets the lion’s share of a $1,000,000 purse, as well as a Win and You’re In berth into the Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) on November 6.

The race is one of the flagship races at Woodbine Racecourse. All-time greats like Wise Dan and Tepin have won the Woodbine Mile, and it is perennially one of the most important prep races for the Breeders’ Cup Mile.

begins with getting to know the contenders.Woodbine Mile Contenders

2021 Woodbine Mile Field

This is the official field for the 2021 Woodbine Mile including post positions, trainers, and jockeys:

  1. Town Cruise (Brandon Greer/Daisuke Fukumoto)

  2. Olympic Runner (Mark Casse/Rafael Hernandez)

  3. March to the Arch (Mark Casse/Patrick Husbands)

  4. Ride a Comet (Mark Casse/Antonio Gallardo)

  5. Set Piece (Brad Cox/Joel Rosario)

  6. Change of Control (Michelle Lovell/Colby Hernandez)

  7. Raging Bull (Chad Brown/Lanfranco Dettori)

  8. Avie’s Flatter (Josie Carroll/Luis Contreras)

  9. Duke of Hazzard (Paul Cole/Kazushi Kimura)

  10. Space Traveller (Brendan Walsh/Daniel Tudhope)

Despite the ten-horse field, there is not a lot of pace drawn into the Woodbine Mile. #1 Town Cruise set a strong pace in the King Edward (G2), the local prep, and has a good chance to work that kind of trip again. He was run down in the lane in that race, however, and he will have even better foes trying to chase him down this time around.

The one most likely to not only reel him in but win the race is #3 March to the Arch. Though he was defeated in the King Edward, he overcame some traffic and did come running late. He also does not have to be as far back as he was last time out. He is consistent, classy, and tactical enough to work that better trip, making him a serious threat in the Woodbine Mile.

#6 Change of Control has a good chance to write another chapter in the illustrious history of fillies running well in the Woodbine Mile. A top-level female turf sprinter, she has already captured a stakes placing while racing against males.

Though the mile is not her usual discipline, she won the Intercontinental (G3) confidently over the one-turn seven furlongs at Belmont, a positive for Woodbine’s one-turn mile. With tactical sprint speed, Change of Control should be close from the outset.

Another horse who can work out a good tactical trip is #8 Avie’s Flatter. Fourth in the King Edward last out, he ran into some traffic that day, and is another who has shown he can win from closer to the pace than he was last time. If he does get a trip like his winning one in the Connaught Cup (G2) two back, Avie’s Flatter has every chance to move forward.

Without a lot of pace in the race, it is no surprise that many good contenders happen to be closers. Those foes include #2 Olympic Runner, #5 Set Piece, #7 Raging Bull, and #10 Space Traveller.

Space Traveller ran a surprisingly good fourth in the Mr. D. (G1) last out, stretching out to a mile and a quarter, and now turns back to his more proven mile trip. With Woodbine Mile-winning jockey Daniel Tudhope in the irons, he should be fit and ready at a square price.

Set Piece may be a little better going a mile and a sixteenth than a flat mile, but he has been consistent this year, and has done well against horses of this class. He will need to get one of his better starts, but he does not need a collapse to get close, and can get a piece of the exotics.

Raging Bull and Olympic Runner fit, but both stand to be underlays. Raging Bull often runs at this level, but more often than not he falls short. Olympic Runner did win the local prep, but he benefited from some of his foes not getting the best of trips, and that puts his foes in a good place to turn the tables.

#4 Ride a Comet and #9 Duke of Hazzard complete the field. Ride a Comet can handle the Woodbine turf course, but he comes into the race off a three-month lay and will have to face a tough group. Duke of Hazzard has some underneath shares in Group 2 and Group 3 races over the last two years, but is not the most consistent and has not won in two years.
