Three-year-old filly Goldstryke Glory will continue her quest to be named Canada’s top three-year-old female sprinter this Wednesday night when she goes to the post for the $100,000 Apelia Stakes for three-year-old and up fillies and mares going six furlongs on the Woodbine polytrack. After beginning her second season of racing at the bulring in Hastings Park, the BC-bred daughter of Second in Command shipped east to Ontario where she had started her career in 2012, winning her second time out. She then jumped up to stakes company, and finished second in the Glorious Song to end the season.

Coming into this one on a two-race win streak

\n

On her return to Woodbine this past summer, she ran fourth in the Duchess Stakes – the only time she has failed to hit the board in eight lifetime starts – before reeling off two straight wins in a $70,000 allowance event, and following that up with a dominating 7 ½ length score in the Inglorious Stakes. As the 8-5 morning line choice in the Apelia, her biggest challenge is likely to come from Florida-bred Youcan’tcatchme ( 2-1). Youcan’tcatchme is two-for-two at Woodbine this year, including a victory in the Grade III Seaway Stakes last time out.

Nikki's Smartypants could offer good longshot price

In the Seaway, Youcan’tcatchme finished ahead of Roxy Gap, who is here to take her on again in the Apelia at morning line odds of 3-1.  Roxy Gap has a string of graded-stakes starts on her resume, and has been in the money 15-of-18 lifetime, although her last win came in July 2012 in the Royal North Stakes. Finishing third in the Seaway was Nikki’s Smartypants, and she’ll be in the gate Wednesday as well and starts with a tempting 8-1 on the ML. Rounding out the field are Acting Naughty (12-1), fourth in the Seaway and winner of the Sweet Briar Too Stakes earlier this year, and Sca Doodle, also 12-1.
