Mor Spirit Headlines Field of Seven for $400,000 San Felipe Stakes

Category : News - Thu 10/03/2016 - 16:56 EST

On Saturday at Santa Anita, the road to the Kentucky Derby (G1) will continue with the $400,000 San Felipe Stakes. A Grade 2 event, the race will be held at a mile and a sixteenth and has drawn a field of seven three-year-old colts and geldings.

Mor Spirit has been installed as the morning line favorite at odds of 2-1 and is one of two horses in the race for trainer Bob Baffert. A dark bay son of Eskendereya, he was purchased for $650,000 as a two-year-old and has won three of his five starts including two graded stakes races.  He was last seen winning the Robert B. Lewis Stakes (G3) and has had a sharp workout since that race. Gary Stevens will be aboard and they will break from post position three.

Exaggerator looking for first win of the year

Second choice at morning line odds of 5-2 is Exaggerator for trainer Keith Desormeaux. A dark bay son of Curlin, he has been on the board in five of his seven starts and is trying to earn his fourth career victory. He closed out his two-year-old season with a win in the Delta Downs Jackpot Stakes (G3) and was second in the San Vicente Stakes (G2) last time out to champion Nyquist. Kent Desormeaux will be aboard and they will break from the outside post.

Class test for undefeated Smokey Image

Also in the field at morning line odds of 4-1 is Smokey Image for trainer Carla Gaines. A chestnut son of Southern Image, the California-bred colt is undefeated from six starts and has won five stakes races against restricted state-bred competition, most recently the California Cup Derby. He is stepping up to graded stakes competition for the first time and will have jockey Victor Espinoza aboard from post position six.
